We Need Change in Our NHS

Our Mental Health system is failing those who need it most, and people are dying because of it. While people with mild to moderate mental health problems are able to access help, more and more people with more severe or complex problems find themselves waiting often over a year to even see a psychiatrist or access basic talking therapies, when they are at risk of serious harm.

We need to change how mental health is treated in the UK. Due to pressure from the government much of the funding for mental health is being poured into IAPT leading to other, more specialised services not having sufficient funding. While IAPT and other primary care trusts only treat mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression, secondary care services provide treatment and support to those suffering much more complex, much more severe illnesses, many of whom are in and out of hospital. These people are being left behind and abandoned by the government, as waiting times to see psychiatrists and talking therapies outside of IAPT rocket up to often over a year, meaning that people in crisis and needing urgent help are left to fend for themselves, putting them at risk of homelessness, further deterioration and death. People are dying, and the government is forgetting about them. We need to see change, now. We need to be investing more into secondary care for mental health, or we will soon find ourselves in the midst of a national crisis.
